Growing up in Detroit, Nocomis Miner II didn鈥檛 always know how he鈥檇 get himself to school in the morning or where he鈥檇 find dinner at night. When he was still in high school, he even lost his brother Robert Cooper Smith to a gunman who mistook him for another man.

鈥淕rowing up was hard,鈥 said Miner, now 25.

Education was his only 鈥渙utlet鈥 and he pushed himself to succeed.
