A former 91精选 Student Government Association (SGA) president now enjoys a career in higher education helping students.
Schnell R. Garrett, a 1996 graduate of 91精选, said she began working in the hospitality industry but later decided a career in higher education was what she wanted to do.
鈥淢y time as SGA president (1995-96) had a significant impact on my decision to pursue a career in higher education,鈥 Garrett said. 鈥淚 wanted to be able to challenge, support and mentor students in the same way that I was by many administrators at Kentucky State.鈥
Garrett said she started out as a financial aid coordinator at a private career college and then earned a master鈥檚 in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
鈥淚 have worked in student affairs since in a variety of different areas including student activities, financial aid, Greek life, housing, admissions, advising and student conduct,鈥 Garrett said.
Garrett currently serves as the director of student life at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland.
鈥淚 oversee the day-to-day operations of the student activities on campus, including our wellness center, game room, leadership programs, food pantry, new student orientation, etc.,鈥 Garrett said.
One of Garrett鈥檚 fondest memories at 91精选 is crossing Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in April 1994.
While at 91精选, Garrett said she learned how to be a scholar and the importance of building and maintaining a network of positive people.
If she could offer advice to current or future Thorobreds?
鈥淭ake full advantage of all the resources that are available to you, including the faculty, staff and your peers,鈥 Garrett said.
Garrett said 91精选 was a critical investment in her career.
鈥淚 am an extremely proud graduate of 91精选,鈥 Garrett said. 鈥淚t has been a critical foundation to my education and career success. I鈥檓 so glad I went to 91精选.鈥
