For the first time in 91精选鈥檚 illustrious history, Student Government Association (SGA) officers were selected by their peers virtually.
Officers elected were Kirk Miller (SGA president), Asia Scott (SGA first vice president), Calysta Little-Prather (chief justice), Miracle Gaines (SGA treasurer), Corey Jones (SGA secretary), John Etheridge (junior class president), Jelani Edmond-Hill (sophomore class president) and Laila Quarles (sophomore vice president).
Miller is a junior business administration major from Louisville.
鈥淎s a transfer student, 91精选 has provided me the opportunity to grow and flourish as I complete my degree at an HBCU,鈥� Miller said. 鈥淚t is my hope that my drive and dedication to my educational pursuits will inspire my family to always keep pushing and moving forward. I especially want to give my younger family members an example that they can be proud of and look up to.鈥�
Miller campaigned on the platform 鈥淟et鈥檚 Win Together.鈥�
鈥淢y goal for the upcoming year is to cultivate a winning spirit and championship mentality,鈥� Miller said. 鈥� I want to see the student body grow and develop both in and outside of the classroom. I plan to enhance students鈥� knowledge of scholarship opportunities, develop an upperclassmen mentoring program that gives back to incoming students, and create initiatives for both leadership and academic development.鈥�
Miller鈥檚 advice to Thorobreds during the pandemic: 鈥淪tay focused, stay connected and stay safe. We must stay focused in the virtual classroom to ensure academic success. We have amazing opportunities to stay connected through the many virtual events and activities the university is offering. And we need to stay safe and take the proper precautions so that in due time we can return to our campus and keep winning.鈥�
Scott is a rising junior communication and journalism major from Indianapolis, Indiana.
鈥淢y goal (for 2020-21) is to invest in myself and learn a new language,鈥� Scott said.
鈥淭horobreds, do not let this pandemic determine your future,鈥� Scott said. 鈥淐ontinue to work hard and never stop learning.鈥�
Etheridge is a rising junior social studies education major from Douglasville, Georgia.
鈥淚 plan to work to enhance the 91精选 experience for all students, but specifically the upcoming junior class,鈥� Etheridge said.
Etheridge鈥檚 best advice for the pandemic is to stay safe and stay healthy.
鈥淧lease reach out to a friend, colleague, or trusted source for any emotional or social support needed; no problem is too small,鈥� Etheridge said.
Quarles is a rising sophomore social studies/education major from Hopkinsville.
Quarles goals for 2020-21 is to ensure her class maintains academic success.
鈥淪tay focused and remember that you are almost to the finish line,鈥� Quarles said.
